Sunflowers are for the birds (chickens)

Our chickens are spoiled, and we tell customers all the time that “happy chickens lay delicious eggs!”    If spoiling our girls a little bit keeps them hard at work doing their farm jobs, then I am all for it.

This year for market, I grew sunflower microgreens a few times.   Instead of putting the spent sunflower trays into one of our compost bins or giving them directly to the chickens, we “planted” them at the back of the garden.

We enjoyed the beautiful view, and our friendly pollinators were quite excited about seeing them as well

But I think that pales in comparison to our dear chickens, when they were gifted with some dried sunflower heads last week.   The entire flock attacked and cleaned this one off in less time it took for me to grab my phone (camera) from the tack room and come back to take a photo!

I am guessing that sunflowers will now be part of our yearly garden 🙂
