I’ve thought about different ways to start our blog… I’d been toying with the idea of back-tracking to the very beginning, trying to explain how we got from where we were a year ago to where we are now. But you know what I figured out? There’s been a lot of life in the past 365 days. Moments, snippets of time, that when I tried to extract individually just ended up sounding stale. And the past 365 days have been many things; however, stale isn’t one of them.
I teased for months that our farm is very much like the “I Know an Old Lady” song. You know it? One of the last lyrics sums up what she swallowed:
She swallowed the cow to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly…
Everything is connected. I notice this more on the farm than I’ve ever noticed with anything before in my life. That’s why it tickled me so much when I came across this very sweet story:
If you give a girl a chicken
Indeed, indeed. If you give a girl a chicken…
In our case, Brian and I started with alpacas. We live in the country, so we needed a good Livestock Guardian Dog. We adopted a Great Pyrenees who’d been a farm worker her whole life – but we didn’t have the alpacas on our farm yet. So we got some Katahdin sheep. We wanted to be good stewards of our land and take care of our animals, so we got chickens to help with pasture cleanup. Our sheep had babies. And then we realized that as our herd grew, our Great Pyr needed a companion, so we adopted another dog.
Wonder what comes next? (So do we!) Stay tuned…
