I worked for an old Yankee farmer in southern New England for many years and he (and others) referred to second cutting of hay as rowan. (Since then I have also seen it spelled rowen.). I always wondered about that term and where it came from. Just last week I was talking to my son who married a woman from Finland and he said ruohon in Finnish means grass (meaning a green grass). Maybe there is a connection there….
